“Performance-driven 'Burned Bridge' sculpture turns a dead metaphor and a pile of lumber into a commanding specter. Burning a bridge is an act of eliminating all possibility of retreat and in this case, sacrifices the sculpture that once was. Politically, it’s self-cancelling — both a brazen assertion of the will and self-sufficiency, yet in its isolationism dooms all (personal and moral) progress. Or, such a surrender can be a celebration.
Fire allows for rapid transformation. It disintegrates the old narrative and rebuilds subjectivity unbound to prior truths. Creation, obliteration, purification. The upward motion of fire.
